2012: End of days?

Over the course of 2011 I have heard all kinds of theories about what will happen to the world in the month of December, 2012. As an open-minded individual I considered every ones opinion. However, it has been my experience in life that we as human-beings are over-dramatic, gossiping drama queens. This is our nature however; since the dawn of man, mankind has questioned the cosmos: But you can believe everything you hear. I am going to put to rest some rumors here today with the little knowledge I have along with the research I have done

One of the rumors out there is that December 21st, 2012 marks the end of the Mayan "long count" calendar which would be the end of a 5,126 year cycle (which is true) and that the planets will align and the gravitational pole will, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...... Okay, this is where things get sketchy. I have heard so many variations of this story its not even funny. This year the Sun and earth will align with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in 26,000 years, and according to NASA there will be no planetary alignment for decades. I do believe that this could effect us is plausible but incredibly unlikely. Although the Mayans were brilliant mathematicians and astronomers, there is no evidence that would suggest that they anticipated any kind of global event on this date. This is the most common Doomsday theory and probably the most likely.....which isnt saying alot.

Another rumor floating around the internet is that a massive meteor will hit the earth this year; much like the one that hit 65 million years ago that wiped out the dinosaurs. The reasonable argument for this would suggest that with technology being what it is in this day and age, any meteor big enough to cause our extinction would have been long ago detected. I don't hold that much faith in out world leaders, personally, so I will not try to disarm this theory with that logic. But... how could a the Ancient Mayans POSSIBLY predict a meteor thousands of years before it was supposed to hit? how could they predict that down to the day? Again this is a theory that seems very.... very unlikely, and will not be something that will even remotely concern me this year.

The final rumor I will cover (briefly) is that of a distant planet called Nibiru, Planet X, or Eris hurtling towards earth. This is completely fabricated. Anyone who believes this lives in a world of fantasy. I don't feel that I need to justify the credibility of this story. However if you feel this is a credible story I would be happy to take your emails here ....Convince me.

Since my recent Black Friday visit at Walmart, I have learned that we as human beings are brutish in nature and that many would beat the piss out of a small child if it meant much more than a few dollars of savings. I look forward to seeing how the panic will affect he people who are convinced that the "End of Days" is inevitable this December.
